While Tails finished the quest, we waited a little distance.
The inside of the branch was crowded with moving people. Heroes and mercenaries to receive quests are rushing past us. It would be at the level of the Awakening, which is still insufficient to climb the tower.
hmmm. Rather, this is the third request this month alone. It’s still early in the month, but there are too many.

Oh Yun-ha murmured while fiddling with her smartphone.

뒤에서 메고 있는 성검이 으쓱거리며 말했다.

‘덕분에 몇 번 살아남았기도 하고.’
아무튼 현재 탑은 고위 마법사들까지 전선에 오르는 급박한 상황이 유지되고 있다.
지금까지 유성 아카데미에 지원 요청이 오지 않는 건 묘해진 불편한 관계 덕분이다. 대외적으로나 대놓고 말하진 않지만, 서로 한 일을 알고 있기 때문이다.
그래도 이제 그런 이야기가 오윤하에게 들어올 정도면 슬슬 한계가 된 모양이다. 확실한 건 우리가 전선으로 나아가면 언제 복귀할 수 있을지 모른다는 거겠지.
‘만약 강제로 내몰리게 되면 그때가 움직일 타이밍이고.’
신전과 황실, 그리고 블랙 호크까지.
아직 새로운 세력 구축은 완벽하진 않지만, 내게 우호적인 신전이 단독으로 ‘우리끼리 탑을 공략하겠다’ 라는 선언만 해줘도 탑에서는 대응하기 어려운 문제일 것이다. 그 선언만으로도 실제로 탑에 오르기까지의 시간도 벌 수 있을 거고.
신전은 최대한 중립적인 스탠스를 유지하고 싶어 하는 것 같지만 내가 끌려가는 걸 막으려면 어쩔 수 없겠지.
“끝났나 보네.”
곧 홍재유의 말에 고개를 돌리니 테일즈가 확인 서류가 담긴 봉투를 들고 오고 있었다. 이제 슬슬 돌아가면 되겠구나. 까먹기 전에 바로 디저트 가게나 들려야겠다.
“그럼 우선···.”
“잠깐만. 지한아, 널 찾던데?”
“엥. 날?”
내 물음에 테일즈는 고개를 끄덕였다.
테일즈의 뒤를 힐끔 보니 아까 그 직원이 내 쪽을 바라보고 있었다. 왠지 이야기가 길어질 것 같은 기분이 들었다.
“흐음···. 오래 걸릴지도 모르니 너희들끼리 먼저 복귀해.”
“굳이? 그냥 같이 가자.”
오윤하가 어깨를 으쓱하면서 말했지만, 고개를 저었다.
“어차피 들릴 때도 있어서 그래. 먼저 가.”
나는 녀석들을 보내고 직원에게 다가갔다. 직원은 내 얼굴을 보더니 확인차 이름을 물었다.
“서지한 영웅 지망생이 맞나요?”
“네. 맞습니다.”
“그럼 뒤에 메고 있는 게 그 성검이란 거겠군요.”
직원의 시선이 어깨너머로 보이는 성검으로 향했다.
성검 이야기는 왜 하는 거지? 일단 그렇다는 뜻으로 고개를 끄덕이자 직원은 서랍에서 꺼낸 뒤집힌 종이를 내게 내밀었다.
“조용히 확인해보세요.”
그 말에 따라 종이를 살짝 뒤집어 내용을 확인했다. 그걸 보고 나보다 먼저 반응한 건 성검이었다.
[호오?]
···왜 이렇게 확인하라는 줄 알겠다.
종이에는 내 얼굴 밑으로 어느 정도 금액이 새겨져 있는 그림이 보였다. 누가 봐도 이건 현상수배서였다.
[하핫. 성검을 다루면서 현상수배나 당하다니. 착하게 살지 그랬나.]
성검의 말에 반응하지 않고 직원을 바라봤다.
“이건 뭐죠?”
“현재 마인 커뮤니티에 돌아다니는 의뢰에요.
“···이런 의뢰가 돌아다닌다고요?”
직원은 내 현상 수배서를 회수하며 이야기를 계속했다.
“기밀 사항이니 자세히 말하진 못하겠지만, 근래 ‘가호’를 받는 지역으로 진입한 마인들은 색출하는 경우가 늘고 있는 추세입니다. 그리고 그에 대한 처리를 의뢰하는 방식이죠.”
“네. 알고 있습니다.”
내가 주로 수행하는 의뢰가 그런 방식이니 잘 알고 있다. 무엇보다 다른 의뢰보단 ‘마인 사냥꾼’ 특전이 있는 내겐 그런 마인 처치 의뢰가 오히려 편하다.
“그런데···, 정보 색출 과정에서 서지한 영웅 지망생이 유독 마인들의 입에 자주 오르내리더라고요. 용사라는 이명으로.”
시발. 그놈의 용사는 거기서 나온 거였구나?
“···그렇군요.”
“어라. 딱히 걱정하는 눈치는 아니네요?”
내가 담담히 대답하자 직원은 의외라는 듯 눈이 휘둥그레 해졌다. 영웅도 아닌 영웅 지망생이기에 이런 태도를 보일 줄은 몰랐나 보다.
“그게 어느 정도 예상은 했거든요.”
무엇보다 그럴 수밖에 없기도 했다.
‘안 그래도 마인을 처치하는 의뢰가 많아진 상태니까.’
이쪽에서 마인들에 대한 경계심이 커진 만큼, 마인들도 마찬가지로 긴장감이 끌어 올려졌겠지.
손이 부족한 상황인지라 그에 대한 의뢰를 수행하는 건 영웅, 용병을 제외하고도 언제든지 현장으로 투입이 가능한 나 같은 영웅 지망생들이 있다.
그런데 마인을 처치하는 영웅 지망생 중 신전의 성물인, ‘성검’을 소유하고 있는 녀석이 있다는 것이다.
‘관심을 안 끌래야 해도 안 끌릴 수가 없지.’
감출 생각이었다면 영웅 지망생 주제에 성검을 대놓고 들고 다니지 않았다. 커스텀 무기를 계속해서 들고 다녔겠지.
어쨌든 지금처럼 이름이 팔리는 만큼 신전에서의 내 상징성은 더욱 중요해질 것이다. ···용사라는 이명은 좀 아니지만.
직원은 내 반응에 안심이 되면서도 걱정이 되는지 말을 덧붙였다.
“괜히 특별 클래스가 아니군요? 그래도 갑자기 습격당할지도 모르니 항상 조심하길 바래요. 돈 말고도 성검을 갖고 싶어 하는 자도 있을 테니까요.”
“하하. 어차피 모든 마인들을 찾아내시지 않나요?”
“늘 예외는 있으니까요.”
내 농담에 직원은 쓴웃음을 지었다.
“성검을 갖고 싶어 하는 게 마인만 있다면 서지한 영웅 지망생도 오히려 편하시겠죠.”
옳은 말이다. 마인만 노린다면 나야 편하지.
[하암.]
그게 아니라서 문제고. 이렇게 하품이나 하는 성검을 탐내는 녀석들이 세상에 워낙 많다.
나는 복귀 신고를 하고 유성 아카데미로 들어왔다. 1박 2일의 일정이었지만 벌써 토요일이 끝나간다. 블랙 호크에 들리는 건 내일쯤에나 가봐야겠네.
‘이거 쉴 시간이 없네···.’
우선 녹기 전에 디저트들을 냉장고 안에 넣어놨다. 하루 정도는 놔둬도 맛은 안 변하겠지.
“성검.”

“용사란 게 진짜 있었냐? 아서 그랑 경도 용사라 불리지 않았잖아.”

지하의 입구를 열기 위해 필요한 영혼철은 최소 3개.
우선 하나는 내가 갖고 있고, 드라칸도 영혼철을 갖고 있었다.
‘그리고 마지막 하나는.’
박노아.
이르티쉬에게 받은 것으로 보이는 영혼철을 박노아가 가지고 있었다.
“성검. 내일 블랙 호크에 가면서 잠깐 병원에 들릴 거야.”
그리고 아르웰에게서 그 조각을 받을 생각이었다.
···여태까지 미뤄왔던 대답도 듣고 말이다.
